MIND THE GAP

LinkedIn is a great tool, but it’s also a mystery how to build a brand and gain traction.

You recognize LinkedIn is essential for professional success, but you’re unsure how to use it effectively to brand yourself or your company. Maybe you’ve hesitated to dive in because you don’t know where to start. I’ve been there. LinkedIn is a pathway to unlocking professional opportunities.

CLOSE THE GAP

LinkedIn isn’t all influencers. More people consume content than produce it, which can lead to opportunities for you.

95% of my referrals and opportunities coming through LinkedIn are from people who have never engaged with my content but have seen it. I’m here to tell you that your presence on this platform is crucial, whether you’re an individual looking to stand out or a company seeking to connect with your audience. I grow my audience by ~1% per month. That doesn’t seem like much, but I carefully curate my audience, which increases my engagement analytics. That 1% represents people who will engage with my content, share my interests, and will likely reach out to me eventually.

Even if you don’t own a business, building a presence on LinkedIn can help you find a job.

Master the algorithm to boost your reach on your LinkedIn.

Understanding how LinkedIn’s algorithm works is critical to maximizing your reach and visibility. The algorithm shows users relevant content based on interests, engagement habits, and professional networks. Here's how it works:

  1. Engagement: The more engagement (likes, comments, shares) your posts receive, the more likely LinkedIn will show it to others. Posts with higher engagement in the first few hours get a visibility boost.

  2. Relevance: LinkedIn prioritizes content from connections and users you interact with frequently. If you comment on a colleague's post or share their content, you'll likely see their future updates.

  3. Quality: LinkedIn’s algorithm evaluates the quality of your content based on factors like grammar, professionalism, and how long users spend reading your post. Thoughtful, well-written content that generates meaningful interactions will be favored.

  4. Consistency: Posting regularly, but not excessively, signals to LinkedIn that you're an active contributor. Aim for consistent, high-quality content over daily posting marathons.

  5. Other posts: LinkedIn rewards you by boosting the visibility of your posts if you actively comment and engage with others' content. It’s a two-way street: the more you engage, the more your content gets seen. Engage 30 minutes before posting. For whatever reason, LinkedIn prioritizes your post if you engage with others’ content 30 minutes before you post yours.

With this understanding of LinkedIn’s algorithm, you can tailor your platform activities to maximize engagement and increase visibility.

🤬 Here’s the bad news - the algo sucks for small creators! Influencers have cracked the code. That’s why your feed is filled with them. They have partnered with other large creators who amplify their content. I’m a part of a Slack community where a member charged $300 a month to be part of a circle that would engage on others’ content.

Your engagement numbers will be low for a long time. It may seem like no one is being served your content. The algo is brutal. Keep at it. You will reach your ideal audience!

Build your personal brand on LinkedIn to unlock opportunities - even if you aren’t looking for a job now.

LinkedIn is the perfect platform to tell your professional story in a world where your online presence often precedes in-person interaction. Whether you’re an executive, consultant, or entrepreneur, your LinkedIn profile is your digital handshake. It’s not hard to build your personal brand—just start with these essentials.

Optimize Your Profile for Maximum Impact

Your LinkedIn profile isn’t a résumé; it’s your chance to showcase who you are and your value to an organization. Follow these steps to optimize your profile:

  1. Turn on creator mode: This mode provides additional features, like including a URL in your header, encouraging people to follow you, the ability to go live, along with other features.

  2. Professional headshot: Your profile picture should be professional, approachable, and up-to-date. First impressions matter. Hint: You can take great photos with your mobile device and touch up in Canva.

  3. Headline: It’s more than your job title. It’s your value proposition. What do you want to be known for? Example: "Executive Consultant | Empowering MedTech Companies Scale Efficiently." Take advantage

  4. Featured content: Use the links features to highlight projects or other successes. You can also use it to link to your professional services if you have them.

  5. Summary section: This is your elevator pitch. Keep it concise and highlight your strengths, experience, and the value you offer. Include keywords your target audience or employers would search for—this improves SEO and ensures you rank high in searches. Include a call to action like “connect with me”

  6. Experience and skills: When listing your jobs, share how you made an impact. Focus on measurable achievements and weave in industry-relevant keywords. Your skills section needs to reflect your expertise and achievements. Follow the STAR format—situation, task, action, result—and quantify results.

  7. Banner image: This often-overlooked space can be a powerful branding tool. Use it to showcase a company logo or a visual that supports your personal brand.

  8. Update your profile regularly: When you update your profile, LinkedIn elevates it in searches. It assumes you have new information to share. It doesn’t have to be massive changes, small changes will do. Once a year, do a more significant update on everything as a refresh. Make sure you’re still using the best keywords and skills. Freshen up your banner or profile photo.

Create content that speaks to the people you want to reach - don’t create content for the masses. Yet.

You don’t need to post daily, but consistency is critical. Create posts that reflect your expertise, share insights, and add value to your network. Here are a few content ideas:

  • Industry insights: Share trends or news in your industry. Show your audience that you’re not just reactive but ahead of the curve. If you’re stuck, write a post about breaking news in your industry or summarize an event you attended.

  • Personal wins: Highlight milestones in your career or business. But keep it relatable—people connect with authenticity, not arrogance.

  • Introduce yourself: Write a post introducing or reintroducing yourself to your network every 4-6 months. This is a chance to let people know what you do and how you can help. Use a picture of yourself to boost your reach.

  • LinkedIn-optimized content: Don’t just repurpose content from Facebook or Instagram. LinkedIn posts that perform well have a distinct format.

  • Engagement: Engage with others by commenting on posts, celebrating their achievements, and sharing relevant content. Engagement fuels LinkedIn's algorithm, meaning your profile and posts are more likely to be seen by others.

Amplify your business’s brand on LinkedIn.

LinkedIn is where professionals find solutions, research companies, and evaluate potential partners. Your company’s LinkedIn presence can be a dealmaker (or dealbreaker). With a strong company page, you’ll attract clients and top-tier talent. If you don’t already have a company profile, it’s easy to request via LinkedIn.

Build an Outstanding LinkedIn Company Page

  1. Professional imagery and logo: First impressions count, just like personal branding. Your logo should be clean and professional and represent your brand well. Use the banner image to highlight your company’s mission or a key product.

  2. Tagline and overview: Craft a concise and compelling tagline. Your overview should clearly state what your company does, who you serve, and why you’re different.

  3. Product and service showcase: Use LinkedIn’s "Product Pages" feature to showcase your offerings. Provide high-level overviews of your top services or products, and include visuals when possible.

  4. Company updates: Share company news, insights, and thought leadership. Keep your updates aligned with your industry’s trends to position your brand as a leader.

Employee Advocacy: Your Secret Weapon

Encourage your employees to be brand ambassadors. When employees engage with and share company content, it drastically increases reach and credibility. To maximize employee advocacy:

  • Encourage LinkedIn engagement: Ask your team to like, share, and comment on company posts. Their involvement increases post visibility, shows potential clients, and recruits that your team is engaged and passionate.

  • Employee spotlights: Highlight your team’s achievements and milestones. This humanizes your company, making it more relatable and trustworthy.

Accelerate the growth and reach of your personal and professional profile.

  • LinkedIn Ads: For companies looking to grow their reach faster, consider using LinkedIn’s paid ads. Sponsored posts, InMail, and display ads can help drive targeted traffic to your page.

  • SEO for LinkedIn: Use keywords in your headline, about section, and job descriptions to improve your profile's visibility. For companies, ensure your page includes industry-specific terms that potential clients or employees would search for.

  • Use analytics: Use LinkedIn’s analytics to track the performance of your posts and profile views. What’s resonating with your audience? Use that data to refine your content strategy. There are third-party platforms that can track this for you.

  • Podcast guest: An appearance on a podcast is a great way to gain exposure and expand your reach on and outside of LinkedIn.

  • Cultivate a network of like-minded people: Connect with others from your industry, company, or ecosystems. It lets the algorithm know that you have expertise in a particular domain. Avoid commenting or engaging with content outside of your expertise.

Podcast Opportunities

Here are the types of content to create and when to deploy.

Content Type

When to Post

Text only

1x per week

Pictures

2x per week

Video

1x per week

Carousels

1x per week

Surveys

1x per week

  • Pictures perform better than text or video, especially photos of you.

  • Video doesn’t perform that well; use it sparingly. Use quick clips between 50 to 90 seconds long.

  • Carousels** perform the best and keep readers on the post longer.

  • Surveys are tricky. If you have a large engaged following, these are great. Use them to collect information on your audience for future content.

**Watch this five-minute video on creating carousels using Canva and Pinetools. (Hint: Hot Tip Twosday is the precursor to the Gap Demystified. I don’t make these videos anymore, but they’re still posted.)

💡 The 5-Hour Formula 💡

Engage with other people’s content - 30 minutes/day x 4 days/week = 2 hours

Create and schedule content = 2 ½ hours week

Plan content = 30 minutes/week

Hint 🤓 - Save time by:

  • Repurposing content. Turn a blog post into the different types of content. One piece of content can be used in dozens of ways.

  • Reposting content that performs well. No one is watching that closely. If a post did well, repost it a month or two later.
